Be Careful Of Your Metaphors

Metaphors are useful building blocks of thinking. They are concise representations of theories and thought patterns and helpful for explaining and understanding. But, to use a metaphor, putting the wrong cordinates into a compass will lead us in the wrong direction.
So is it the term gettting 'unplugged'. Unplugged implies the natural state for an object is to be plugged in. A vacuum cleaner is not very useful unplugged, unless you perhaps see it as an object d'art. But it is the opposite for man . When we are 'plugged in' - to our devices and looking at digital media or using navigation systems like GPS we are minimizing the parts of us which make us connect and tune into the world. It is useful for example to put in a destination to Google Maps and hear a soothing voice tell you to turn left in a hundred feet, but it is an entirely different experience to tracking a live animal on foot which requires total engagement of mind, smell, touch, sight, sound, and that most elusive of senses, intuition.
